Dental implants on blue backgroundAre you missing some teeth? Dental implants are a wonderful way to fill those gaps. The success rate of dental implants is very high — over 98% in eligible candidates — but in some cases, dental implants can fail. There are some things you can do to prevent dental implant failure and enjoy a healthy and complete smile for life! Keep reading for the 5 most important steps for successful dental implants in Superior.

#1: Don’t Smoke

Patients who use tobacco are at a much higher risk of dental implant failure. Smoking decreases the flow of blood to the jaw which can slow healing after a surgical procedure. It is a good idea to reduce or stop smoking in the months leading up to your dental implant placement. Try not to resume the habit again after healing — even initially successful dental implants can fail later on.

#2: Follow Post-Op Instructions

Immediately after your dental implant placement, you will need to plan for plenty of rest and relaxation to promote comfort and healing. Doing anything too strenuous too soon can slow healing and may result in implant failure. Follow your dentist’s instructions, which will include eating a soft foods diet, brushing and flossing carefully, and taking all medications exactly as prescribed.

#3: Perform Good Hygiene

Peri-implantitis is an infection that may develop around the dental implant post. This condition often occurs as a result of poor oral hygiene, like lax brushing and flossing habits. To keep your dental implants healthy, make sure you brush your teeth for two minutes, twice daily, and floss between teeth once daily. Your dentist may talk to you about cleaning with an interdental brush to achieve the most thorough clean.

#4: Eat Well

Even after your dental implants have fully healed, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key for keeping them sturdy and functioning properly. A big part of this is your nutrition. Make sure you eat a balanced, nutritious diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Fortunately, dental implants make it easy to chew all of life’s most nutritious items.

#5: See Your Dentist Routinely

Your dentist will advise you on how often you should visit for a checkup and cleaning. For many people, it’s every six months — though it can be more often. These routine appointments are important because they allow your hygienist to clean around the teeth and gums, removing plaque and tartar buildup that can contribute to infection and dental implant failure. Plus, your dentist will get the chance to check in on each tooth and implant to ensure they are sturdy and healthy for the long haul!

There you have it! Follow these 5 steps and enjoy healthy, long-lasting dental implants.
