Woman has questioning expression

Dental bridges are an excellent way to replace consecutive missing teeth because they look just like the real thing, but they don’t last forever. When you get a dental restoration, it’s safe to assume that you’ll want them to look great and function properly for as long as possible. Here’s what you should know about how long a dental bridge can last and what you can do to keep it working and looking great in the long run.

How Long Can I Expect My Dental Bridge to Last?

Dental professionals have expressed different opinions about how long a dental bridge can be expected to last. Deciding factors in the equation include diet, lifestyle, and overall oral hygiene habits. The Cleveland Clinic states that a dental bridge can last for at least five years but can exceed ten years if the patient practices proper oral hygiene while keeping up with their regular dental visits. The University of Rochester Medical Center goes even further, saying that most dental bridges may even last a lifetime with excellent care.

How Can I Properly Care for My Dental Bridge?

The first rule for caring for your dental bridge is to practice great oral hygiene. A good daily oral care routine includes brushing at least twice a day, using dental floss or a water flosser to clean between them, and finishing the job by rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash. You must also keep up with your regular dental appointments to keep a professional eye on the health of your bridge and natural teeth alike.

How Should I Eat When Wearing a Bridge?

You should stick to softer foods in small pieces when you first get your bridge. Be sure to chew evenly on both sides of the mouth while avoiding tough, sticky, crunchy, or chewy foods such as steak, nuts, chewing gum, or sticky candies like taffy or caramel. Be judicious in your food choices and consult with your dentist if you have any concerns or questions.

A beautiful, full smile is worth the effort of maintaining it. Your decisions and habits will ultimately determine how long your dental bridge lasts, and it can be a long-term or even a lifetime investment if you treat it with the proper care.
