If you are new to dentures<\/a> or have just received a new set, you may be excited to have a full smile that helps you feel confident. You’ll have a restored bite and have an easier time eating, but be sure to treat this restoration right! By taking care of them properly, they’ll be able to last for years, reaching the end of their lifespan instead of needing a replacement sooner than expected. Here are three simple habits to follow to keep them in great shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

1.)  Brush Your Dentures Once Daily<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dentures can\u2019t get cavities, but that doesn\u2019t mean you don\u2019t need to brush them like natural teeth. It\u2019s important you remove any bacteria, plaque, and food debris to avoid oral health issues and staining!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully, giving them a good scrubbing doesn’t take much. First, lay down a cloth or fill your sink with water, as this tooth replacement can be slippery when wet. Next, use a prosthetic-specific brush (or a soft-bristle toothbrush) with gentle, clear hand soap to clean out your restoration. You should aim to do this twice a day, but at least once is okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are in a rush or don\u2019t have your tools nearby, then using your fingers and water can be good enough for now. Just remember to brush them when you can!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.)  Soak Your Dentures While You Sleep<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The tip above is a great step in cleaning your dentures, but you should also soak them throughout the night. They are porous, and sometimes brushing can’t get all the bacteria in these small crevices. Instead, you can place them in a glass of water or a soaking solution to keep them sparkling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only that, but this will also help preserve the shape of your prosthetic. If you put them on a counter, then you risk them drying out and cracking. You’ll also give your gums a break and allow yourself to wipe them down from buildup as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.)  Know How Dentures Are Supposed to Fit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you first get your dentures, they’ll likely fit snug and comfortably once you are adjusted to them. This will change as your jawbone changes, so you\u2019ll need to get them relined. If not, then you may notice how they feel loose or slip more often. You may be more likely to develop sores, so visit your dentist to get a stable bite once again! That way, you feel confident wearing this tooth replacement for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
